Last Saturday we were pleased to stumble upon the concert of the Hackney Colliery Band (Wah Wah 45s), a North London based brass band. They have managed to follow the proud tradition historically seen with these kind of combos in North England and Wales, while simultaneously updating it and keeping the sound fresh. The concert was part of the Funk and Bowl Club’s schedule at Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes…a club/bar/bowling alley that is hard to classify in the lower level of Hotel Tavistock. We had the chance to explore this awesome venue a bit before the concert started. Here, you can sing in a karaoke booth, bowl a few rounds, or eat an XL pizza at the same time while enjoying groovy live music. Meanwhile in the booth, DJ Sigher was spining some Rare Grooves, Soul and Funk (Strictly 7’s), warming things up before the band showed up on stage. With some technical issues causing a delay, the Hackney Colliery finally began the show with an audience more than willing to dance and rock out to covers from songs of many different styles ranging from Rap to Soul through Jungle, such as Goldie’s «Inner city life«, «No Diggity» by Blackstreet or the «Prodigy medley» that they have made their own and arranged exceptionally in a combo composed of musicians from different musical backgrounds. Nonetheless, some of them are also members of the Bollywood Brass Band and various classical orchestras, but they have a very clear vision and proven taste and quality. There was also space for their own compositions, songs like «What’s the time Mr. Wasp?», «Creeping Around After Dark» and «Smile for the Webcam» to name a few from their two studio albums, the eponymous debut from 2011 and their most recent, “Common Decency”, which had the audience dancing from beginning to end. We thoroughly enjoyed groovin’ to this band worth keeping an eye on!
El pasado sábado tuvimos el placer de asistir al concierto de Hackney Colliery Band (Wah Wah 45s), una brass band del Norte de Londres que recupera la larga tradición de este tipo de formaciones en el Norte de Inglaterra y Gales, a la vez que aportan su visión y mantienen un sonido fresco y actual.
El concierto estuvo enmarcado dentro de la programación del Funk and Bowl Club, en Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes. Un club/bar/bolera difícil de clasificar en los bajos del Hotel Tavistock, que tuvimos la oportunidad de explorar antes del inicio del concierto y en donde puedes desde reservar una cabina de karaoke, a una pista de bolos o comer pizzas de tamaño XXL a la vez que disfrutas de música en vivo. Mientras en cabina, DJ Sigher lanzaba ráfagas de Rare Grooves, Soul y Funk (Strictly 7’s) a modo de calentamiento antes de que la banda saliera al escenario. Con algo de retraso, debido a problemas técnicos, los Hackney Colliery empezaron el show con un público ya mas que ansioso de bailar y disfrutar con sus versiones de temas de diversos estilos desde el Rap al Soul pasando por el Jungle, que ya son clásicos de su repertorio. Temas como “Inner city life” de Goldie, el “No Diggity” de Blackstreet o el apoteósico “Prodigy medley” que han sabido adaptar a su sonido y arreglar de manera excepcional, en un combo compuesto por músicos con distintos bagajes musicales (Algunos de sus miembros forman parte de grupos como la Bollywood Brass Band u Orquestas clásicas) pero con las ideas muy claras y un gusto y calidad de sobra demostrados. También hubo espacio para composiciones propias de sus dos albums de estudio, su debut homónimo de 2011 y el más reciente “Common Decency«, temas como “What’s the time Mr. Wasp?”, “Creeping Around After Dark” ó “Smile for the Webcam”… por nombrar unos pocos, que tuvieron al publico bailando de principio a fin y disfrutando de una banda a la que merece seguir la pista. Nosotros sin duda lo haremos.
