April 28th marks the official release of the album “Congo Beat the Drum” (Freestyle Records) by the Israeli producers duo Kalbata & Mixmonster. The first is known for his 2-Step productions for labels like Soul Jazz and his remixes for bands like Fat Freddy’s Drop and Spank Rock. Meanwhile Mixmonster is a member of The Apples and tone half of Radio Trip.
In «Congo Beat The Drum» they have tried to bring back the authentic Dancehall & Dub sound which they have managed to pull off with great success. In order to achieve this, the album was recorded in their Tel Aviv studio using 100% analogue equipment including a 16-track tape recorder and a vintage analogue mixing console with live musicians.
A year later they moved to Kingston to track and record with Jamaican music legends such as Echo Minott, Mutabaruka, Prince Jazzbo, Puddy Roots and more, obtaining the characteristic atmosphere of the late 70’s- early 80’s Jamaican productions and adding in some of today’s sound in the process. Creating for us what is certainly one of the most interesting proposal so far this year. Essential!
El 28 de Abril salió oficialmente el disco “Congo Beat the Drum” (Freestyle Records) del duo de productores israelíes Kalbata & Mixmonster. El primero es conocido por sus producciones de 2-Step para el sello Soul Jazz entre otros y sus remezclas para gente como Fat Freddy’s Drop o Spank Rock. Por su parte Mixmonster es miembro de bandas como The Apples o el duo Radio Trip.
En “Congo Beat the Drum” han tratado, con gran acierto, de recuperar el espíritu del Dub y el Dancehall más autentico. Para ello el disco fue grabado de manera 100% analógica en su estudio de Tel Aviv con músicos en vivo, en un grabador de cinta de 16 pistas y una mesa de mezclas analógica. Un año después se trasladaron a Kingston para grabar con algunas leyendas de la música jamaicana como Echo Minott, Mutabaruka, Prince Jazzbo, Puddy Roots, entre otros, consiguiendo la atmósfera característica de los discos jamaicanos de finales de los 70/ principios de los 80 y añadiéndole algo del sonido de hoy, creando lo que para nosotros es sin duda la propuesta más interesante del año.
